Peter Saville designs new England shirt

England’s footballers will be wearing a new home shirt for their match against Bulgaria on September 3, with graphics designed by the legendary Peter Saville.

Given the team’s pathetic performance over the summer it’s perhaps not the best time to be asking long-suffering fans to shell out £49.99 for yet another new kit. In the accompanying press blurb, manufacturers Umbro say that the design “takes its inspiration from the more formal classic shirts of England’s footballing past. Umbro has developed a new longer, more open neckline for the shirt, building on the square neckline that was designed for the away shirt but allowing additional movement across the chest, keeping its shape especially when a player is running.”

Saville’s contribution is somewhat minimalist. A graphic of multicoloured crosses sits on the shoulders which is, apparently, “evocative of the basting stitches synonymous with bespoke tailoring”. They are also meant to represent the diverse nature of modern English society.

Radiohead “Karma Police”

Going back to my somewhat forgotten favourite videos on a Tuesday idea heres an old favourite in Radiohead’s “Karma Police” great song with a great video directed by Jonathan Glazer, previously responsible for Radiohead’s “Street Spirit (Fade Out)” clip. The video premiered in August 1997 and featured Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke as well as Hungarian actor Lajos Kovács. Glazer won MTV’s Director of the Year award in 1997 for his work on this, as well as Jamiroquai’s “Virtual Insanity”. Glazer however revealed in an interview that he considers this video to be a failed attempt. According to MTV.com, Glazer had pitched the concept of the “Karma Police” video months earlier to Marilyn Manson, who disliked it.

Build are offering a number of these beautiful posters from 2004. They were originally designed and printed for now-defunct Australian magazine Refill, and were folded up neatly to fit inside; the ones on offer are as pristinely flat and as fluro-bright as the day they were born. I had not seen these before but are very reminiscent of The Designers Republic 3D>2D which is proudly sat in my cupboard at home as one of the first design pieces I ever bought.

One of the directors showcased was young animator Tom Judd, this is his graduation video from 2009 and its fucking sweet, so watch it. HelloVon: Nike Stadiums

Yesterday morning a cool project was unveiled as part of Nike’s World cup presence at Selfridges in London. Nike have partnered with London-based artist HelloVon to produce spectacular set of images, taking over the whole length of Oxford Street, celebrating some of the best footballers in the world.

The seventeen separate celebratory portraits capture the magic, passion and emotion of the tournament that will have the world fixated for the next two weeks. He’s done a pretty staggering job and the impressive 5m x 3m pieces are up until Friday – they’re well worth a cheeky look.

So the POKE Weekend Away 2010, was actually a couple of weeks ago now but better a late post than none at all, had a great weekend down in Devon so a massive thank you to all involved, the hangover was horrific but worth every second.

Bunch of Stars exhibition update

We had a final push to finish off all the press packs on Thursday, and we are lucky enough to have had the foreword written by graphic design legend Malcolm Garrett, who has famously worked with major 80s artists such as Simple Minds, Duran Duran and Peter Gabriel.

We’re also preparing to letter press the posters for the show by picking papers, organising inks and preparing plates. We can’t wait to get down into the workshops and start reeling off the prints, photos will be posted shortly. If you wish to receive an invite for the exhibition then please email me.

The brochures, which will feature a special phosphorescent cover will be on sale at the event along with the limited edition letter pressed posters. These will also be available from the Bunch shop.

Online Voting for World Industrial Design Day Poster 2010

World Industrial Design Day celebrates the profession of industrial design, and encourages the use of design in improving quality of life around our planet.

For 2010, the international student poster competition has asked design students from across the globe to share their vision and interpret this year’s theme, “Industrial Design: Humane solutions for a resilient world”.

The five final posters were chosen by the jury and are up for online voting here untill the 27th of this month.

One of the entries (pictured above) was done my mate Ivorin Vrkas from Bunch Zagreb and he has politely asked me for some help, so please vote.

…it certainly does. The announcement of this record really cements the end of Oasis. As far as I’m concerned Oasis are/is the Gallagher brothers, so unless one of them dies brothers can’t technically split up. Once this solo shit is over with they will be back with lovely grey indie mullets wafting in the Manchester wind. Emotions aside, great album artwork, reminiscent of the early stuff only with an italic logo, stinks of the finest Britpop imaginable, now and forever. Flash website for feature film “Anyone You Want” directed by Campbell Graham.

A young businessman befriends a troubled homeless girl on the streets of Sydney and is drawn into her secret fantasy world. Over a lost weekend they try out new personalities – from hippies to grunting cavemen. But as these games bring them closer together they are forced to confront the frightening reality of each other’s lives.

In turns touching, edgy,and funny, “Anyone You Want” features rising Australian stars Socratis Otto (Wolverine – Origins, The Matrix Reloaded), Tabrett Bethell (Legend of the Seeker – Disney/ABC) and veteran comic actor Max Cullen (Australia, Wolverine Orgins).

The film is the first feature of award-winning director/writer Campbell Graham. His extreme comic short “Dare” premiered at the Yahoo Film Festival in L.A. and was picked up by Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard for their film website Pop.com. His other films, ads and music promos have sold and screened internationally.

New Ravens In Paris artwork for the forthcoming double A side single “By Candle Light / Camera Shy” due to be released on Monday 31st May 2010 on digital download and limited edition vinyl. I am also in the process of creating a brand new website for the London based band, formerly known as The Charlie Parkers.

Promotional campaign for Ministry of Sound’s 18th Birthday party by Studio Output.

For most people an 18th birthday means two things: a chance to finally discover the taste of alcohol, and the first experience of an 18-certificate film.

To celebrate the occasion of Ministry of Sound’s arrival into adulthood, we selected transgressive quotes from famous 18-rated films to create a brash, tongue-in-cheek campaign. Simple, solid black typography and an abundance of fluoro inks gives the artwork real punch on flyers, posters, adverts, a website, banners, wristbands, projections and screens in the club and on t-shirts.

After almost a decade since his last Don’t Panic collaboration, they have announced Banksy as their latest poster artist. Celebrating the launch of his new film “Exit Through the Gift Shop” (trailer below), the poster features an exclusive piece entitled “Forgive Us Our Trespassing”. The same image can also be found on a wall in Salt Lake City, Utah (pictured above).

These limited edition posters will be available in Don’t Panic Packs from selected shops in each Don’t Panic region and also outside specially selected gigs and club events over the next couple of weeks.

The channel is bold, distinct and captures the wonder of cinema. Driven by the concept ‘inside studio’ it brings to life an insiders perspective from the studio that makes the movies.

Central to the look is the new Studio Universal logo and the yellow and black illuminated environments. Use of the ‘arc’ in the logo creates a ‘screen’ for content and info. Blending these elements creates a channel celebrating the best of mainstream film.

Calaveras

Calaveras (Spanish for skulls) are produced every year for the day of the dead — a day of festivity, when prints, skeletal artefacts, toys, cakes and sweets are sold and ritualistic offerings are made to dead relatives. The great Mexican printmakers Manuel Manilla (1830—1895) and J.G Posada (1852—1913) made hundreds of Calaveras or Dances of Death which show skeletons in everyday acts, working, drinking, dancing, preaching, fighting, flirting and riding bicycles and display an incomparable mixture of vanity and morbidity.

Screen printed by hand in London on handmade paper and can be purchased from Magma today.

On the way to work this morning, I saw a couple of RBMA posters sitting on a wall looking very urban down Redchurch Street so thought I would make use of my iPhone camera and in turn post a bit of Thursday morning self indulgence. The entire promotional campaign for the Red Bull Music Academy London 2010 was curated at Bunch. We approached various illustrators from around the globe to help us with this project including Andrew Kasay, Omega!theKidPhoenix and James Joyce, I will be posting some more of the wicked work that came out of it shortly. The Wild Things

Having recently watched the new animated movie of Where the Wild Things Are, this lovely piece of illustrated bookary fittingly came to my attention. The book collects some of Geoff McFetridge’s drawings created whilst working with Spike Jonze on the titles, type treatments and marketing graphics for the film. The 16 page book measures, 19.5 x 25.5 cm, and is printed on Color Offset and a copy will set you back $14 from Nieves. Also worth mentioning is the films cheeky soundtrack, very good, so I suggest you legally acquire it and apply it to your ears today or tomorrow.

Beautiful new title animatic by Johnny Kelly and Jethro Haynes. This stop frame animation is the new title sequence for Dutch science show “Het Klokhuis” (The Apple Core). It is Hollands oldest youth television show, covering everything from the history of dinosaurs to how an iPhone is made. This was commissioned by advertising agency Kesselskramer, produced at Nexus Productions, and was made in collaboration with model maker / sculptor Jethro Haynes. The apples and core models were built using 3D printing technology.

Moving to Mars

At Bunch we have been working with Coded Pictures on promoting the film Moving to Mars, this is now scheduled to air on More4 very shortly.

This moving yet humorous film in the True Stories strand from Director Mat Whitecross and Producer Karen Katz follows two refugee families from Burma over the course of a year that will change their lives completely. Forced from their homeland by the repressive military junta, they have lived in a Thai refugee camp for almost twenty years.

A UN relocation scheme offers them the chance of a new life, but their new home, in the British city of Sheffield, will be different to everything they’ve ever known. With intimate access, Moving to Mars depicts their struggles with 21st century Britain.

At Bunch this project has been running for a while but its such a great project I thought I would introduce it this year as a feature on the blog. The Star of Bethnal Green is a delicious pub, surprisingly located in Bethnal Green, London. The project begin internally with myself and other designers at Bunch creating designs and illustrations based around the Star branding, visit www.bunchdesign.com to see the history. Because of the success of the MadeinBunch project we decided to try something similar with this an ask artists all around the world to take part, each months design coming from a different corner of the globe we have so far had Hong Kong, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Russia and USA to name a few. These will soon be featured online and exhibited in London.

Danny Rolph — Automatic Shoes

For his first show at Poppy Sebire, Danny Rolph presents a new series of sapphire blue backed triplewall paintings. These new works are a continuation of Rolph’s investigation into his discourse with space. They are taking on a more direct relationship with painting’s topology. The deep blue plastic ground upon which the actions occur offer up an infinite recessional space that resembles the night sky. This blue ground is where Rolph performs his analysis on forms and on colours and their ensuing drama.

If You Could Collaborate

The If You Could Collaborate exhibition will feature the artwork produced by all 33 pairings at the A Foundation Gallery, Rochelle School in London. The work ranges from classic framed pieces, to more ambitious, experimental sculpture, film and installation. Alongside the exhibition is an accompanying catalogue, comprehensively charting the process each individual project shown at the show over 312 pages. Included are sketches and workings of the creatives involved, as well as a final representation of the piece they will be exhibiting. The catalogue is published by It’s Nice That in an edition of 1,500.

2010 Letterpress Calender from AisleOne

A sexy start to the year from AisleOne, they have created a limited edition of 50 letterpress prints featuring a calendar with the year printed in English, Italian, French and German. The 2010, the days of the week, and the edition number line are all printed blind. Type is set in Helvetica. All prints are numbered and signed.

The calendar size is 16.5″ x 23.5″ (A2) and printed on Crane Lettra Fluorescent White 110# (300gsm) paper.

Some amazing visuals created by current studio sharing chum and all round jolly nice chap David Terranova. David says “Marko Perendija and I were asked by Mark Knight to produce some visuals to back him over the course of his world tour. So with the help of James Mountford we put together a shoot with dancer/model Lydia.

For the purposes of the visuals we actually processed the footage in such a way to make Lydia barely recognizable: the photographic elements were stripped down to become rather graphical, as opposed to photo-realistic, which is in fact more suited for club-visuals.

We delivered these visuals quite some time ago now, and it felt like a bit of a waste to have all this footage crushed down to an unrecognizable pulp of shapes and colours, so I thought of making something else out of it. So here is a short promo dedicated to Lydia as she worked so hard for us and had so much patience under those hot lights.”

The winter 2009 edition of Varoom magazine has been released which includes an excellent feature on eight legendary illustrators, with collectively over three hundred years of experience, revealing the lessons from a lifetime in the business. This features Seymour Chwast, Ralph Steadman, Shirley Hughes, Marshall Arisman and Judith Kerr. The magazine also has an excellent Japanese inspired cover by one of my favourite illustrators, James Joyce, which also features in an article exploring the connections between British Illustration, Japan and Consumer products.
